Yammer is an enterprise social network designed to help drive business objectives. It is very similar to Twitter and Facebook, however it focuses on the needs of companies. Businesses can keep their communications private and secure while giving employees a centralized location to network.
Yammer provides enterprise micro blogging that enables users to begin conversations, collaborate and read posts made by others. Employees can build profiles complete with images, experience, work history and contact information. Yammer also allows users to form and join groups that can be set to public or private so that only specific members of the company can join. Direct messaging feature area also included and can be sent to one or multiple co-workers. Additional features include a company directory, knowledge base, file sharing capabilities, community creation for those outside of the company network and administrative tools.
Yammer was founded in September of 2008 by David Sacks and Adam Pisoni. Based out of San Francisco, California, the Yammer team consists of around 100 individuals, including CEO Sacks, CTO Pisoni, Vice President of Marketing Steve Apfelberg, board members Sean Parker, and George Zachary, Director of Platform James Patterson, Recruiting Director Joseph Cheung-Seekit and Generalist Matt Knopp.
In June 2012 Yammer was acquired by Microsoft for $1.2 billion in cash.

A sales representative will contact the user to offer a quote for access. Once a company has a Yammer network set up, employees can visit the site and enter their company email address into the large data entry field provided on the homepage to sign up for an individual account.
Yammer offers two types of company accounts to users. The first is a free basic membership. The free account includes security and privacy features, micro blogs, status updates, employee profiles, file sharing with unlimited storage, groups, external communities, Yammer desktop and mobile apps, event listings, polls and questions, unlimited API access and the ability to deactivate former employees. A premium membership costs around $5 per user per month and upgrades to include advanced admin and security controls, custom branding, custom usage policy, ActiveDirectory sync, single sign on, broadcast messages, priority customer support, SharePoint integration, customer success manager access, keyword monitoring, data export, crisis communications and a virtual firewall solution. The site offers volume discounts as well as special pricing for non-profit organizations and educational institutions.
